How To: Properly Clean Your Mattress

— by Stearns & Foster on Jul 27, 2022

You may enjoy a warm mug of tea on a rainy morning or snuggling with your four-legged friend in bed after a long day. While these comforts can bring inevitable accidents, there’s no need to fret. We’re here to help you ensure that your Stearns & Foster® mattress withstands the test of time, with our tips on how to properly clean and care for your mattress.

First, adding a mattress pad or protector will help you rest assured that your mattress is safe from spills and other mishaps. Start with researching top-rated protectors to get the best protection for your mattress. A mattress protector will reduce the likelihood of the materials and craftsmanship of your Stearns & Foster® being ruined if a dreaded accident occurs.

Second, wash your bedding with hot water to remove any bacteria, dander, or dust mites that have accumulated over time. While the sheets are washing, go the extra mile by vacuuming with the upholstery attachment. Vacuuming your Stearns & Foster® will help remove any allergens, dust mites, oils, and skin cells from the surface of your mattress. Don’t forget to pay special attention to the sides, seams, crevices and your bed frame for the best results.

If your mattress is stained as a result of an accident, you may also consider quickly spot cleaning the area. Remember: less is more — it’s important to note that you should never use any harsh cleaners or large volumes of liquids that can seep into the mattress or the foundation. Mix one-part mild soap or detergent with four parts cold water in a bowl. Use a dry cloth to absorb as much of the stain as possible. Then, use a clean, soft cloth or hand towel to lightly blot the stained area with your water/detergent mixture. Next, use a new, clean cloth with only cold water applied to blot the stain and rinse the soapy mixture from the fabric. Lastly, never use dry cleaning fluids or bleach, because they can damage the high-quality mattress materials. Feel free to vacuum the mattress again after you’ve completed the spot cleaning process.

Finally, remember to rotate your mattress occasionally to ensure your weight is evenly distributed over time on the head and foot of the mattress. Once your mattress and bedding are clean, you can make your bed and enjoy refreshed sleep all night long.
